How It Works

When you open the tool, an AI model loads into your browser in the background. Once ready, the entire detection and cutout process happens locally on your machine. You drop an image, the AI figures out what is foreground and what is background, and you get a clean transparent PNG — all without a single network request leaving your device.

The AI does not just draw a rough box around your subject. It traces along actual edges — including fine details like hair strands, fur, and semi-transparent areas. After the initial detection pass, a multi-step refinement pipeline sharpens the result further, so the cutout looks clean at full resolution, not just at thumbnail size.

First visit vs. repeat visits: On your first visit the AI model downloads and is stored in your browser's local cache. Every subsequent visit — including offline — loads instantly from that cache. You only wait once.

How to Remove a Background — Step by Step

  1. Open pixl.pet/remove-bg/ — the AI model begins loading immediately in the background.
  2. Wait for the progress ring to complete. On the first visit this takes a moment; after that it loads from cache in under a second.
  3. Drag and drop your image onto the page, or click to open the file picker. PNG, JPEG, and WebP are all supported.
  4. The tool processes your image automatically — no button to click, no form to fill out.
  5. Preview your cutout against a checkered background to see the transparency clearly.
  6. Click Download PNG to save the transparent result to your device.

Your Images Stay on Your Device

The AI runs entirely in your browser — there is no server receiving your photos. Nothing is uploaded. Nothing is logged. After you close the tab, no trace of your image remains anywhere except on your own machine.

The tool also works offline once the model has been cached. You can remove backgrounds on a plane, in a meeting, or anywhere without an internet connection — and your images remain completely private the entire time.
